Meet The Newest Team FITAID Athlete, Guilherme Malheiros

Q&A with Crossfit Star Guilherme Malheiros

Guilherme Malheiros, also known as Gui, is the 21 year old Crossfit Phenom from Brazil who is quickly becoming a star in the CrossFit world. He was first introduced to CrossFit in 2016 at the age of 16. That year, he ranked 45th in the world and second in Brazil. The following year, in 2017, Guilherme took 2nd in the CrossFit boys division (16-17) and was crowned the 2nd Fittest Teenager on Earth.

Fast-forward to 2019 and Guilherme, 19 years old, is the Fittest Man in Brazil and is competing in the CrossFit Games in the men’s division. He would go on and place 48th at the 2019 CrossFit Games. In 2020, Malheiros finished atop the rankings of Fittest Man in Brazil again. However, due to COVID-19, he did not compete in the 2020 games.

After a year of not competing at the 2020 CrossFit Games, Guilherme was determined to make a statement during the 2021 Games and that is exactly what he did. Guilherme would go on to win three events, the 550 yard sprint, the sprint and heavy clean ladder, and the one-rep max snatch event. Guilherme was one of two competitors to take home first place in at least three events. As the youngest competitor at this year's Madison Games, Guilherme would go on to place 7th overall at the 2021 CrossFit Games. Also, Guilherme would be crowned Most Improved Athlete at the CrossFit games for his efforts.

Guilherme has the potential to carry the sport for the country of Brazil and bring more fans and competitors from all countries within South America. While some believe Guilherme is the future star this sport needs, Guilherme believes the future is now.

We sat down with the future star of CrossFit to learn more about him, his love for CrossFit, and the biggest differences between his home country of Brazil and America.

Q: When do you first become aware of FITAID?

So I knew FITAID in 2017. I was in Puerto Rico. I loved it. The shirts and all of their apparel, obviously the drink, the recovery drink. So I wanted to be sponsored by FITAID but at that time I did not have the contact to talk to someone. So I just waited and was like ‘man one day I’m going to be sponsored by FITAID.’ And then in 2021 after the games, Aaron Hinde (Co-Founder and President of LIFEAID)  just stopped his car in the middle of a crowd of people and said “Hey Bro! I want to sponsor you!’ And I was like ‘Yeah! Let's go!’

Q: Why do you love working out?

Because it makes me feel better with myself and improves my self confidence. Working out improves my mental game and my mentality towards life. I love working out because it makes me feel better, lighter, strong, and self confident.

Q: What is your favorite workout song?

I don’t have only one. I have maybe a type of music. Hip Hop and Electronics but between those two, Electronics.

Q: What is your favorite part about competing?

My favorite part is getting the crowd on their feet.

Q: What is your favorite post workout meal?

Acai, for sure, I love it.

Q: What does your morning routine look like?

Wake up, wash my face, scrape my tongue, brush my teeth, go to the kitchen, drink water, say good morning to my girlfriend, make a coffee, and make some plain waffles with honey on top.

Q: What do you miss most about Brazil?

From Brazil I miss the food, my family, my friends, the beach, and my dogs

Q: What is the biggest difference between Brazil and America?

People here are not used to hugging each other. When you get to the gym, it's just waves and ‘sup’, ‘morning’, ‘what's up.’ In Brazil it's more like ‘come here bro, how's the day? How was your night? How did you sleep? Come here, hugs, kisses, all that stuff.

Q: What is your favorite food here in America?

Tex Mex...  Rice, chicken, cheese, cheese (yes double cheese) lettuce, tomato, in wrap. Like a Burrito.

Q: What are some of your hobbies outside of CrossFit?

Sleep, eat frosted flakes, play video games, watch Netflix, and sleep.

Athletes around the world have become all-too familiar with the struggles of trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and exercise regimen while gyms have been temporarily closed worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sharing our quarantine experiences and struggles with our fitness friends has become a major way for us to connect and stay motivated in a time of social distancing.

But what has quarantine been like for professional athletes?

We interviewed four FITAID athletes—Kelsey Kiel, Jacob Heppner, Neal Maddox and Jackie Perez—to get their take on how they’ve been not only staying fit but also what key learnings they may be taking away from their time in quarantine so far. Here's what they had to say!

QUESTION 1

FITAID: Isolation coupled with a massive change in our normal day-to-day life can be tough for everyone. What obstacles have you experienced and overcome during quarantine?

Kelsey Kiel: I think one of the biggest things people (including myself) weren't used to when we started this whole quarantine is the "being alone with yourself" thing. I always thought I was independent (I still think that), but being separated from normal life and interactions, you really have to be okay with sitting with yourself (all the thoughts and feelings that come with that). It was a tough thing for me at first, but I've really embraced FEELING and THINKING and BEING. Which is a bit abstract, but I think it's helped me grow.

Jackie Perez: Quarantine has forced me to really take a look at what I rely on for happiness. Total isolation has shown me that I rely on others and events to make me happy or motivate me. I have overcome this by trying to focus on the things that bring joy to me. The things that if they were taken away, they wouldn't take my joy. I've started doing things I would never stop and take the time to do like read and go on walks or journal. Things that don't require much but truly make me happy.

QUESTION 2

FITAID: As many of our local CrossFit boxes have been closed, what are some ways that you've been keeping fit during quarantine? What is the most unique thing you've done so far for fitness?

Jackie Perez: I created a Running Club because I found myself very unmotivated to workout. It was a huge success and had over 500 people sign up. I thrive on community so I created one where we all pushed each other and kept each other accountable. Nothing replaces the community vibe of being at the gym, but we must adapt to the current situation instead of letting it control us.

Neal Maddox: I tend to go for bike rides a lot. I put together a home gym so I am able to train still.

QUESTION 3

FITAID: Staying positive and tuning in to our emotions have been very important lately. How have you been staying present, positive and connected?

Jacob Heppner: For those of you that know me you know I'm already a super positive and connected person! One thing I recently did during the quarantine period was to start Fitness Related Awesome News (FRAN) which shares positive and uplifting news from around the globe in the fitness space!

Kelsey Kiel: I've been doing a lot of self work and reading and writing. It's also been helpful to have people around me (not necessarily physically, haha) who have been there—FaceTiming, phone calling, and connecting that way. My dog also helps me stay positive because he's so dang cute.

QUESTION 4

FITAID: Describe how you've been focusing on nutritional wellness during this time. What have been some of your favorite healthy dishes you've made during quarantine?

Kelsey Kiel: I track my macros regularly, and I recognized after a few weeks that nutrition and food is something I can control, so it actually helped me feel a sense of normalcy to continue to count and track my macros and eat the normal, healthy and tasty things I normally would.

Jacob Heppner: I've actually spent a lot of time focusing on my nutritional wellness and realized that so many others need that help and need accountability! So I recently started "Functional Eating" which is a nutrition company with a 1-on-1 coach, the same coaches I use for my diet and nutrition for competing at the Games. Our main focus is giving every person that accountability and relationship instead of just a plain ol' diet template that doesn't keep you accountable!

QUESTION 5

FITAID: What advice do you have for other athletes during quarantine? What have you personally taken away from this experience?

Neal Maddox: Advice I could give is this: get off social media and pick up a book. I have been basically going back to school and gathering as much knowledge as possible. The reason is because I want to come out of this pandemic a better person and great coach for my clients.

Jackie Perez: The best advice I can give is to only focus on what you can control. See opportunity in the situation that will help you grow. It's a great time to get back to the fundamentals and make them bullet proof. We won't have this kind of time to rebuild from square one again so focus on the basics and get really good at them so when things go back to normal, we can continue to build.

C O N C L U S I O N

This experience has shown me just how important it is to control our thoughts. This can either be the biggest tragedy we have had to deal with or an opportunity for growth in areas of our lives we have ignored because we were too busy.

As Jackie Perez mentioned in her interview, “Nothing replaces the community vibe of being at the gym, but we must adapt to the current situation instead of letting it control us.”

While it can be easy to lament the temporary closing of your local gym, remember that everyone—even professional athletes—are going through the same experience, and with that knowledge we can move forward together towards a positive and healthy future.

Being an athlete goes beyond training & performing. It’s a lifestyle. A lifestyle that requires a high level of attention on everything outside of the actual physical exertion—sleep, recovery, stretching, mental attitude, immunity, mood, body weight, food choices… Every great athlete knows that the physical strengths will only take you so far.

“An athlete’s health foundation is what truly sets one up for success.”

As a serious athlete and a board-certified sports dietitian, I have a relatively sound, health-forward diet, but even I can make improvements. Confession: I do not follow a strict diet. Instead, I make nutritious choices and aim to do what’s best 80% of the time, leaving 20% for fun. I’m finding that while it is nice to have a ‘break’ from assessing my performance diet, 20% is still a large chunk. Imagine if you slacked off on 20% of your training? Eek. As my goals get stronger, I need to re-evaluate that 20%. Those choices do not have to be perfectly on point, but they can still be choices that will be beneficial for my health instead of taking away from it.

For example, one of my 20% choices used to be Diet Coke. However, I know it is not good for my body. The research is pretty clear that soda, whether full of sugar or sugar-free, does not promote health and actually is proven to take away from it—decreasing gut microbiome by 50 percent, increasing type 2 diabetes and numerous other crazy health risks...

Luckily, I’ve found an ideal replacement that is still cold, refreshing and energizing, but is actually health-promoting, specifically when it comes to targeting my body’s nutrient needs for fitness improvements. FITAID ZERO is a researched-based, naturally flavored beverage that is specially balanced with supplemental ingredients that help athletic recovery. Now instead of grabbing a cold can that might lead to increased sugar cravings and weight gain, I can grab a cold can that might improve muscle speed, reduce muscle breakdown, strengthen mitochondria, provide antioxidants, replenish electrolytes and boost energy levels after a tough workout. This is due to the drink’s potent blend of vitamins, minerals, green tea, quercetin, turmeric, BCAAs, and CoQ10—ingredients proven to positively influence performance factors. FITAID ZERO also has (as the name suggests) no sugar! Meaning it won’t spike my blood sugar and I can rely on more whole food sources to provide the carbohydrates and calories my body requires.

C O N C L U S I O N
You don’t have to worry about being strict all the time, but do consider how those 20% choices play in to your 100%, choosing wisely whenever there are those easy, small swaps you can make to create a healthier foundation that will boost your lifestyle and ultimately improve your athletic performance.

 — A Raleigh man, who recently won an international fitness title and was crowned The Strongest One-Armed Man on Earth, is now using the platform to show others how to reach beyond their limits.

Logan Aldridge, 28, lost his left arm in a boating accident when he was 13. But, as a former high school athlete, Aldridge said his fitness level soared when he started CrossFit six years ago.

"I can say with certainty, I would have never imagined, or could have imagined, this," he said.

Earlier this summer, Aldridge competed in the WheelWOD international competition for adaptive athletes. Adaptive athletes have one or more physical impairments.

Despite winning the title of "Strongest One-Armed Man on Earth," Aldridge said his main goal has always been to inspire others.

"I wanted people to look at me and say, 'If he can do it, than I sure can.' There's no reason not to try," he said.

John Prescott, who owns Neuse River CrossFit, introduced Aldridge and nine other adaptive athletes to the gym.

"Logan really radiated the mindset of it’s not a matter of if, it's a matter of how," Prescott said. "It's been one of the coolest parts of this whole experience, learning how to be with adaptive athletes and how to coach them."

"We're far more capable than we give ourselves credit, or than we know," Aldridge said.

Aldridge said he plans to continue to inspire adaptive athletes to live healthier lives and loves helping others to see the possibilities.

After a disappointing injury forced Sara Sigmundsdóttir to withdraw early from last year's CrossFit© Games, in Madison, Wisconsin, fans can finally breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Sigmundsdóttir's first-place finish in the worldwide CrossFit© OPEN last month has unofficially* secured her a spot on the competition floor at the 2019 Reebok CrossFit© Games, where I'm sure redemption will be sweet for the four-time Games athlete.

Following back-to-back 3rd-place finishes at the Games in 2015 & 2016, Sigmundsdóttir finished 4th at the 2017 Games, just shy of a podium spot. Then, her 37th-place finish (due to withdrawing early on in the competition) last year left a bitter taste in her mouth, as her untimely injury instantly crushed her podium dreams.

Now, Sigmundsdóttir (26) looks stronger than ever, promising to give two-time reigning champ Tia Toomey and the rest of the competition a serious run for their money as the "Fittest Woman on Earth."

FITAID & the entire CrossFit© community wishes a healthy & healed Sigmundsdóttir GOOD LUCK!

With her eyes laser-focused on that podium, she can bet her bag of Haribo gummi bears that we'll be cheering our hearts out for her at the Games. Few athletes deserve a spot atop that podium as much as this persistent badass does.

We are confident this year's CrossFit© Games will have a much happier ending, come August. To quote one of her favorite sayings, "Live long and prosper."
