There are 2 different kinds of probiotics: native and transient. Native flora are probiotics that reside in the gut while transient probiotics enter the gut through probiotic-rich foods and also help to shape the terrain of the microbiome.
In general, lactobacillus and bifido bacteria are examples of transient flora that you can find in yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, coconut kefir and other fermented foods. Native probiotics are similar to the microbes found in healthy soil. Research shows that our gut contains the same probiotics as the earth! We truly are what we eat. In light of this, it’s important to source local organic produce that still contains healthy soil residues to improve your own gut flora.
This step sounds simple, yet it can honestly be the most challenging part of healing the gut and your skin. Our society is known for eating a “SAD” diet (Standard American Diet) which is full of sugar, toxic oils, and refined flour. Health is often not encouraged or made easy/convenient in western cultures. In order to reduce our intake of sugar, my clients and I have found it helpful to avoid dishes with sugar unless they’re made from scratch. If I choose to make something sweet I’ll use high-quality ingredients and no refined sugar. Instead I will use raw local honey, 100% maple syrup or fruit to sweeten my treats.
Food prepping and ingredient reading are some other tips I have for avoiding processed foods. You can always read the ingredient list and choose to purchase brands with less than 5 ingredients that you know and understand. Ideally, you can make your own granola bars, crackers, and snack on real food (or leftovers) to get you through those long days.
Fiber has been a part of indigenous communities’ diets and is recognized by most doctors to maintain a healthy digestive system. Fiber, both insoluble and soluble, will come from vegetables and fruits. You can also get fiber from nuts, seeds, and grains; however, in my clinical experience, I have found that some people with severe gut issues have trouble digesting these fibrous foods at first. In fact, it can be easier to get more fiber in your diet when you cook your vegetables. I recommend starting the week by roasting a handful of root vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, and greens to set you up for a fiber-full week.
Bone broth is all the rage right now, but you want to make sure you are eating high quality bone broth. I like the brands that you find in the freezer sections because of nutrient density and zero preservatives. There is also a difference between meat stock and bone broth. Meat stocks can have a higher healing effect on the digestive system because of the meat and ligaments that are used to make the stock. Meat stock recipes are shorter cooking times and use meat on bone to get more collagen and gelatin in your stock. These serve as the glue to fill the holes in your leaky gut which are causing food intolerances and acne.
Snacking is a SAD (Standard American Diet) habit. For people with blood sugar regulation issues, mainly hypoglycemia, it’s important to eat protein and fat more frequently at first, but eventually, those who feel the need to snack all the time will be able to space out their meals to allow time for proper digestion. Allowing enough time between meals (approximately 3-4 hours between meals) allows your body to fully digest your food. When foods are not fully digested, undigested food can start to feed opportunistic bacteria which create imbalances, toxins, and infections in the gut which contribute to acne.
Outside of clearer skin, improved gut health will improve immunity, balance hormones, boost mood, balance weight, and speed up recovery from stress. Our bodies are what we eat, but also how well we digest what we eat. The building blocks of our skin cells, neurotransmitters, hormones, and muscles come from the food we eat and properly preparing and digesting it.
After making these changes, you can begin to see improvements with your skin clarity within 3 to 6 months. Improvements with digestion usually occur within 30 days! Despite our desperation, the fact is, healing takes time. Especially when there have been years of toxins absorbed into your body and years of feeding imbalanced gut bugs. Everyone is bio-individual, so what works for you might not work for someone else. But, once you start to move the needle on how well you are digesting your food, the improvements in your skin, mood, and energy will be sure to follow.

While the holidays can be a fun and busy time of year, there are definitely times where you find yourself looking at your schedule wondering how it’s possible that you’re going to squeeze everything in! From visiting family to wrapping gifts and preparing food, it can be a little overwhelming at times. While this time of year can be focused on giving to others, it’s important to remember to give back to yourself as well with these 5 tips for combating holiday stress.
Working out can help to relieve stress by releasing endorphins and giving you a singular focus. By spending an hour or two in the local CrossFit box or pounding it out on the treadmill at home, carving out some time to focus on yourself and your goals can be a much needed respite during the rushing around of the holiday season.
Taking some time for yourself to read, play with your dog or just have a coffee alone can do wonders for your mental health. Spending time with our pets can help to relieve stress when we’re trying to tackle that to-do list. The holidays can be a very overwhelming time with all the parties, dinners and tasks that need to be done! Take some time to refocus & recenter yourself so you can jump back into the festivities fully rejuvenated. Bonus tip: adding in a CBD supplement could also help to relieve anxiety, depression & any joint pain from your workouts. A win/win!
Making a list of items that need to get done can help you to feel more organized and together when its out of your head and down on paper! With the most pressing items listed first, that will help you to make sure everything gets done when it needs to get done and you don’t feel rushed or pressured. Another useful tool is to understand that not everything has to get done in one day. Next to your tasks, write down what day they need to be done and what day you want to get them done. No time for it today? Try to get it done tomorrow. Be kind to yourself during this stressful time.
While it can be easy to get bogged down in what didn’t work out correctly or that frustrating relative, try to turn your mind to the positives. Getting to spend time with family can be stressful but focusing on the reasons why we love and appreciate our family and friends can help to realign your mind to a more positive space. Write down some positive affirmations or positive things that happened that day rather than dwelling on the cookies that didn’t turn out or the gift that still hasn’t been delivered.
Whether it’s asking your partner to pick up the gift from the shops or asking your friend to be a sounding board, it’s always okay to ask for help. There is no need to spread yourself so thin so you eventually crack! Ask for backup and you’ll be sure to get it.
Keep in mind that while the holidays can be heaped in stress, it’s ultimately about spending quality time with the people that you love. Try not to stress about the changes in plans, unexpected guests or burnt cookies! It may seem like a lot at the moment but allowing yourself to have the space to step back and decompress can mean so much for your mental health and happiness during this holiday season.

Eight in 10 Americans say politics are currently the biggest stressor in their life, according to a new report.
A recent poll of 2,000 Americans revealed that 78 percent of respondents say politics is currently stressing them out more than anything else in their life.
The current political climate topped everything as the biggest weight on our lives, but it wasn’t the only thing currently causing us anxiety.
Thirty-seven percent said a health issue is presently giving them fits, while over a third of Americans (35 percent) pointed to their partner as a big current source of stress in their life. The study, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of LIFEAID Beverage Co., found that over half of us are currently stressed out by work (51 percent) and money worries (51 percent).
Over one in four Americans say their work commute is currently stressing them out, with nearly a third (29 percent) saying social media causing them distress.
Another third (32 percent) say climate change is currently stressing them out.
Two in three Americans (67 percent) say they’re so stressed right now that it’s causing them to be less productive at work.
Dealing with all the stress can be quite problematic, too, as 69 percent of respondents say they tend to turn to “unhealthy” coping mechanisms.
It can also be pricey: The average American was found to spend $960 annually directly on trying to feel less stressed.
And if your current stress levels feel like they’ve never been higher, you aren’t alone. Sixty-eight percent of those polled say right now is the most stressed they’ve ever been in their entire life.
And there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel: Two in three Americans polled (67 percent) said they don’t see their stress being relieved any time soon.
“Stress is both physical and mental, and one can easily exacerbate the other in extremely stressful times, even with regular exercise and a good diet. It’s important to find your center, and responsibly produced and marketed products with hemp can help you get there,” said Emily Sommariva, CMO for LIFEAID Beverage Co.
“Our survey results tell us 51 percent of respondents strongly believe hemp offers stress relieving benefits. And hemp drinks are a convenient option. You can hang without the hangover, and feel in control — something everyone who is stressed out, wants more of.”
With the holidays coming up, that means it’s time for holiday-related stress to rear its ugly head.
Shopping for gifts was found to be the most stressful part of the holidays, with 37 percent it causes them stress.
The act of visiting family was also atop the list (36 percent), along with cooking (34 percent), as well as crowds and lines (30 percent.)
Even the receiving gifts was found to be a pretty big stressor for nearly one in three respondents (31 percent).
Sadly, two-thirds of Americans say the stress they’re currently experience is actually dampening their holiday spirit.
“The negative effects of stress are cumulative, which is why you have to address stressful factors in your life methodically,” said Sommariva.

Each year, BevNET’s annual Best Of awards honors companies, brands, individuals, products, ideas and trends from across the dynamic and ever-changing beverage landscape.
As in years past, 2019 witnessed the emergence of disruptive newcomers developing alongside established players seeking out new frontiers. In ways both big and small, this year confirmed that there isn’t a singular route to success. In bottled water, we saw Essentia reap the benefits of a dedicated long-term growth strategy, fueled by strong execution, and at the same time we saw Liquid Death capture the imagination of consumers with a wholly unconventional (and unmistakable) marketing voice. We saw young companies in categories like energy and coffee help bring a new generation of functional beverages to mainstream audiences, while also watching as legacy brands extended their reach with new innovations. Some well-worn rules were confirmed, and others were torn up in style. There was truly a bit of everything.
With such a wide breadth of worthy nominees, the process of selecting our Best Of 2019 award winners was hardly simple. These honorees represent a vibrant and dynamic group of brands that we feel best encompass the ideas, personalities and products pushing the beverage industry in exciting new directions at the dawn of a new decade— and we can’t wait to see where they will take us next. Congratulations to all our winners!
"The entire team at LIFEAID Beverage Company, LLC is beyond honored and thrilled to have been chosen as the recipient of a BEVNET Best of 2019 RISING STAR award! Thank you for this acknowledgment. Here's to rising to even greater heights in 2020," LIFEAID posted on their LinkedIn profile following the announcement at the BevNET LIVE event on Monday, December 9, 2019.
When functional beverage brand LIFEAID first made a name for its workout-based FITAID line through its partnership with CrossFit©, it seemed the company had settled into a strategy of cornering niche target demographics through a focus on hyper-specific use occasions such as partying, travelling and golfing. But after several years of incremental gains, 2019 finally saw LIFEAID and its entire product portfolio break into the mainstream. This past year the company’s risky take on functional beverages saw a vast expansion as it tripled its retail footprint, established a robust DSD network in the West, and made nationwide expansions in major outlets like Walmart and CVS. Co-founders Orion Melehan and Aaron Hinde said that LIFEAID’s mainstream breakout was always the long-term plan, even as it spent years with an emphasis on narrow channels -- part of an “incubation” strategy that through close customer relationships and ROI driven marketing is finally seeing validation in the broader market. Earlier this year, LIFEAID raised $7.7 million in April to fuel this growth and now with Fitness, Focus, Immunity, Partying, and Golfing all covered, the company has introduced sugar-free varieties with FITAID ZERO and FITAID RX ZERO. And the innovation isn’t done yet: the brand has announced LIFEAID HEMP as the latest addition to its beverage portfolio -- making it one of just a handful of established brands to date to jump into the hemp space.

We all love a good hike when the weather is warm and everything is blooming but it takes a real die-hard hiker to strike out when the snow is blowing and the temps are dipping. There is nothing like stepping out into an abundance of flurries and some beautiful winter scenery but not being prepared can definitely ruin the experience. If you’re a first time winter hiker, take these tips with you on your next cold weather adventure:
Dressing in layers is key for a comfortable winter hike. Typically you’ll warm up quite quickly but start off quite cold. Being able to have control over your wardrobe will make the hike more comfortable as you’re able to take off a hat or put on some gloves. Taking a lunch break during your hike can cool your body down quite quickly so be sure to throw on your outer layer to keep your core warm. Having a Merino wool base layer offers a lot of versatility in that they stay warm in cold temperatures but it offers breathability once you get warmed up.
While not super vital, it can just be nice to have something special that you wear only when you make it to camp. Similar to throwing on some camp shoes, there is just something nice in being able to peel off the clothes that you wear while you were trekking and putting on something warm and new. Keeping a favorite hoodie or sweatshirt buried deep in your bag that you can throw on when you’re done for the day will warm you up mentally and spiritually as well as physically.
If you’re an experienced hiker, you know that there are definitely things that you’ll need along the way that often times people don’t think to bring. Keeping things like aspirin, vaseline, sunscreen (you can get sunburned in the winter!), lip balm, tissues, etc. are very important in making your hike a more productive and positive experience. If you have a hip belt, keeping these items tucked away to where they are easily accessible is best so that they you don’t have to stop and dig them out of your pack. However, if you don’t have pockets on your hip belt, keeping a small waterproof bag in the top portion of your pack with your “possibles” can help to make your hike more comfortable in the long run.
Even though you might not feel like it, your body is still sweating and exerting energy under all of those layers and sometimes we forget to keep hydrating. Keep drinking water and you’ll feel more energized to keep going on your hike! You’ll also feel more clear headed and alert. Becoming dehydrated can cause cramping or could cause hikers to become confused. It’s easier to feel the typical signs of thirst when your body is warm and sweating, but the first sign of dehydration is thirst. Take care of your body before it starts sending you distress signals.
As with all hiking, make sure someone knows where you are and when you plan to return. Especially when it comes to winter hiking, it is very important to communicate to someone back at home. Whether you’re going on a day hike for a few hours or a multi day out-and-back, let someone know.
Winter hiking can be a fantastic and rewarding experience that can lead to longer and more technical hikes in the future. Be sure you’re prepared before you go and it’ll be sure to be a more comfortable and exhilarating adventure!
